However, whilst it might seem overwhelming to learn about all these different Middle Eastern movements at once (at least I thought it was), understanding their origin and objective does help to digest the complexity of the current situation. It’s a little bit like watching a rugby match without understanding the rules of the game. You are surely aware of the big tackles, but not why both teams continue to willingly enter a seemingly endless scrum.
Fatah and Hamas are the two main political factions of Palestine. But apart from believing that their way is the best for the future of the nation, they have very little in common. Especially, when looking at the differences between Fatah’s and Hamas’ international reputation after 1993. Back then Fatah was the leading party and accepted Israel’s right to exist, whereas Hamas was seen as a terrorist group by the US and Europe, as a result of its many suicide bombings on Israel.
